Privacy Policy
NOTEPANS is a private, local-first personal organizer. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information. (The app was formerly called SNAP; the rename did not change how data is handled.)
1. Summary
Everything you put into NOTEPANS is stored on your own device. The developer does not operate any server that receives your data, NOTEPANS has no user accounts, and NOTEPANS contains no advertising or analytics.
2. Data you create in the app
Notes, tasks, events, contacts, places, promises, links, media, shopping lists, agendas, projects, tags and vault entries are saved in an encrypted database in the app's private storage on your device. Vault passwords and notes are additionally encrypted with your master password. The developer cannot access this data and cannot recover your master password. If you forget it, your data cannot be recovered without a backup and that password.
3. Device permissions
NOTEPANS requests permissions only for features you use, at the time you use them:
- Location — only when you choose to capture your current position for a place. The coordinates are saved on your device with that item and are not transmitted by NOTEPANS.
- Calendar (read-only) — only when you choose to import events from your device calendar. NOTEPANS never writes to your calendar. Imported events are copied into NOTEPANS's local database.
- Photos / files / camera — only when you attach a photo, GIF or file, or take a photo. Attachments are copied into NOTEPANS's private storage.
- Notifications and alarms — to show reminders you set. Reminders are scheduled locally on the device.
- Biometrics — to unlock the app using your fingerprint or face, handled by the Android system. NOTEPANS never receives your biometric data.
- Internet — used only for map tiles, described below, and to open links you tap.
4. Maps and third parties
When you view or download map areas, NOTEPANS requests map tile images from OpenStreetMap (tile.openstreetmap.org). As with any web request, OpenStreetMap receives your IP address and the tile coordinates requested. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy. Downloaded tiles are cached on your device for offline use.
When you tap a link, phone number, email address, or a WhatsApp / Telegram / Messenger / Viber shortcut inside NOTEPANS, Android opens the relevant app or browser. That app's own privacy policy then applies. NOTEPANS does not send your contacts' details to those services on its own.
5. Backups, sharing and exports
Backup files are encrypted with a password you choose. Backups, calendar (.ics) exports and shared items are created only when you ask and are saved or sent only to the place you select (for example a folder on your device or another app via the Android share sheet). Files you share into NOTEPANS from other apps are processed on your device.
6. What NOTEPANS does not do
- It does not collect, sell or share personal data with the developer or advertisers.
- It does not use analytics, crash-reporting or advertising SDKs.
- It does not create accounts or upload your content to any server.
7. Children
NOTEPANS is a general-purpose tool not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.
8. Data retention and deletion
Your data stays on your device until you delete it in the app, clear the app's storage, or uninstall NOTEPANS. Uninstalling removes the app's database and attachments. Backup files you saved elsewhere remain until you delete them. See how to delete your data.
9. This website
This website is a static page hosted on GitHub Pages. It has no forms, accounts, analytics or advertising, and its fonts are served from the same site. If you choose a theme, that choice is saved only in your own browser. GitHub, as the host, may process technical data such as your IP address under its own privacy statement. If you email the developer, the email address and message you send are used only to reply to you.
10. Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
